DANA WHITE: THE WEC LIGHTWEIGHT DIVISION WILL EVENTUALLY MOVE TO THE UFC

As the WEC prepares to make its pay-per-view debut on Saturday, UFC President, Dana White, revealed future plans for the generally lesser known Zuffa property.

Currently home to the bantamweight, featherweight and lightweight divisions, the WEC is still planning on adding flyweights (125 pounds) sometime in the future. However, WEC General Manager, Reed Harris, isn’t sure when that transition will take place.

“We’re still entertaining that. What we had to look at, though, is that we had a roster of fighters now, and in order to keep these guys in top condition and to keep them in fighting mode, you have to give them a certain amount of fights over the year. I think that’s one of the things we do better than any organization out there. To add that flyweight division would dilute that somewhat, and we felt like we needed some time to still catch up with the guys we had. So we’re still looking at that, but right now our focus is getting our fighters fights and keeping them in contention for those titles and things like that.”

After purchasing the fledgling promotion, Zuffa moved the WEC welterweight and middleweight fighters to the UFC. The only overlapping weight class between the two promotions is at lightweight. There has been some speculation that the WEC 155 pounders would eventually make the switch as well. Today, White confirmed those intentions.

Before fans can start dreaming up new match ups, White made it clear that the changes will not occur until the flyweight division is added to the WEC.

“I actually think it’s kind of cool,” White said. “I think eventually what we do is, we’re going to continue to add to lighter weights, and you’ll end up seeing these (WEC) guys go into the UFC, the 155 pounders.

This is the first time that White has made any sort of announcement regarding his intentions to unify the 155 pound weight classes into one division. With no definitive timetable set, fans hoping to see the likes of Ben Henderson and Donald Cerrone face off against the UFC’s best will have to wait.
