GRAY MAYNARD WANTS HIS SHOT AT THE CHAMP

Two days after upsetting B.J. Penn to win the UFC Lightweight Championship, Frankie Edgar already finds himself with a target on his back. One name in particular stands out above the rest: Gray Maynard. Although Kenny Florian can make a strong case to get the first shot at Edgar, Maynard is the only person who can claim a victory over the newly crowned king of the 155 pound division.

Maynard, undefeated so far in his career, faced off against Edgar at UFC Fight Night 13, winning a unanimous decision. While the fight wasn’t off the Richter scale in terms of excitement, Maynard did display a higher level of wrestling and strength, which could come into play should a rematch be made.

Although he hasn’t officially called out Edgar, Maynard made it known to UFC matchmaker, Joe Silva, what he has in mind for his next fight.

“I texted Joe Silva and told him I want the [title] fight. I will fight whoever they want me to, but they know I want to fight for the belt.”

Since their first meeting, Edgar has exponentially improved his boxing skills; however, his physical stature will likely make him the smaller man in any fight he takes inside the Octagon. With that in mind, Maynard believes that he has the proper game plan to thwart a long standing title run for Edgar.

“You have to bully him. He is fast and you can’t let him move around like he did against Penn. You have to hit him with some punches, then get your hands on him and push him up against the cage and make him fight your fight.”

Should Maynard get the first shot at the new champ or does Florian make a more interesting match up? Just to make it interesting, what if the winner of the Urijah Faber vs. Jose Aldo bout at WEC 48 moves up to the lightweight division for a super fight with Edgar?
