DETAILS BEHIND LAST SATURDAY’S SHINE FIGHT CANCELLATION REVEALED

After Don King Productions successfully stopped Ricardo Mayorga from facing Din Thomas on Saturday, fans assumed the remaining card would continue as planned. However, in a somewhat surprising move, the North Carolina Boxing Authority instead decided to cancel the entire event.

Speculation was rampant as to why the promotion couldn’t proceed without the Mayorga fight. To quash any internet rumors, Executive Director Ken Pike and Superintendent Terrence Merriweather revealed the true reason behind the sudden termination.

“There were concerns about fighter safety and well being, that’s why the fight was canceled,” said Merriweather. “What we’re talking about specifically is failing to have a doctor at the event, at the time for the fighters to be seen before the fights had started.”

In North Carolina, it is the promoter’s responsibility to provide an on site doctor. According to Merriweather, Shine Fight Promotions failed to secure a physician in time for the start of the event. Likewise, the company did not submit the full purse amounts to the commission in accordance with state guidelines.

“North Carolina rules and (regulations) require the promoter to have all purse amounts to the boxing authority two hours before the first match-up, and those requirements were not met,” said Merriweather.

In light of this new information, it seemed likely that the event would have been cancelled regardless of the legal action brought by Don King.

To make matters worse, Shine Fight matchmaker, Ron Foster, officially announced his resignation from the company. In an email statement, Foster said, ”because of the actions that took place on Saturday, Sunday and Monday I no longer feel that Shine Fights is the place for me.”

Shine Fights CEO, Devon Price, has not released a statement regarding the allegations of the North Carolina Boxing Authority.
